ABOUT

This video series examines the enduring impact of neocolonialism on Caribbean politics, exploring how historical forces shape modern governance, identity, and society. Through expert insights and historical context, it offers a concise look at the region's complex political landscape.

NEOCOLONIALISM

Neocolonialism in Puerto Rico is evident in the ongoing U.S. control over crucial aspects of the island’s governance and economy, despite the absence of full democratic rights or independence. This dynamic has left Puerto Rico politically marginalized and economically reliant, severely restricting its capacity to make autonomous decisions about its future. The outcome is a complicated and frequently disputed relationship, shaped by tension, perseverance, and persistent debates surrounding its political status and sovereignty.

POSTCOLONIAL DOMINATION

Modern colonialism has led to the neglect and commercialization of Puerto Rico’s historic infrastructure, prioritizing tourism over preservation. Cultural identity has been diluted by U.S. influence in language, media, and education. Politically, the island remains under U.S. control without full representation, limiting self-determination and fueling ongoing debates over its status.
